By a 4-1 vote, the BISD board of trustees voted last night to declare a financial emergency. Financial consultant Bill Lenhart told trustees the district is in serious financial trouble. He recommended $32 million worth of cutbacks and that could lead to up to 300 layoffs. That number could decline depending if some employees retire. The pending takeover of the
district by the Texas Education Agency cannot stop the layoffs. Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois will meet with principals next week and layoff notifications will be sent out by June 12th.
